Flamesheart academy was one renowned for its inclusivity. Having been founded during a time of uncertainty when humans and demi-humans were just beginning to find common ground, as a way to allow both sides to start building the bonds of friendship.
It’d been some centuries since that founding, with the academy still boasting the widest diversity of student population from both sides. At the start of the school year, new arrivals were being assigned their dorms and roommates.
One such arrival was in the process of unpacking her rather meager belongings, her fluffy white tail idly swishing back and forth as she both waited to find out who her new roomie was, as well as hoping the two of them would at the very least hit it off when they met.
“I wonder where they are? This place isn’t that hard to navigate.” she asked herself, making her way to the door to look into the hall.
“That’s kind of overwhelming to think about. I could graduate and go on to start working while you three are still in academia, all for the simple reason that my lifespan is much shorter.”
“Rei would have to explain her quirks again to her next roommate.”
“Luckily they thought ahead with that. You typically have to sign up for those classes exclusively, and aside from the one that everyone who’s expected natural lifespan exceeds one-hundred-and-fifty-years has to go through… Rei doesn’t seem like the type to focus on that kinda long-term stuff.” She explained with a light giggle.
“She mentioned once to me that her patron explained his philosophy on longevity and perception. Something about how it doesn’t matter how long you live, so long as the people you care about get to enjoy it alongside you.” She said, though despite not phrasing it as one, her tone took on one of a question at the end.
“Something tells me you guys haven’t put much thought into the lifespan differences either.” She noticed.
“Or rather, you make a point to not think about it too hard. Which, I guess makes sense. It’s depressing to know someone you may care about will only be around for a small portion of your journey.”
She nodded “yeah, it’s kinda sad to think about it that way. But I don’t think you and I will have to worry about it too much. Despite how different we are, I think the average lifespan of a Lamia is maybe a decade longer than a human’s. Something about our colder blood compared to you guys messes with our metabolism and slows it down.” She explained.
“And Lizardfolk have a wild percentage range when compared to humans. Something about their morphology dictates whether it’s a 1% or a 30% difference overall. And I think Gatorfolk are upwards of 50% elven average. Which was a big difference to note.” She said, looking at Asta with an awestruck face “it’s kinda crazy to think that, considering nobody’s seen any of the old bloods since the last big war.” She continued “and I don’t think either of us need to bring up dragons. Their legends speak for themselves.”
“Those are really different lifespans, yeah… I worry about Rei sometimes. She’s one of the people who will probably be around way past a lot of her friends. I wonder if she’ll feel really lonely.”
“Maybe what her patron said about enjoying the journey with people for as long as they are present is some comfort.” She shrugged. “So what do Lamias do during winter months? You’re cold-blooded, so I assume you have to prepare even more ahead of time than humans for the shift in weather.”
“Oh yeah, me and Amelia have a heated mattress we share. Though we only turn it on when it gets cold. We usually make do with high durability insulated socks for our tails when we have to go out in the cold otherwise.” She said looking at Asta with a grin “we get very cuddly when it’s cold. And our bed is basically a big nest of blankets and pillows.”
“We also do a lot of hot drinks, but Amelia has a big appetite so we also do a bunch of stews and roasts. So if you’re ever low on food, I’d be happy to bring you some leftovers.”

“I wonder where they are? This place isn’t that hard to navigate.” she asked herself, making her way to the door to look into the hall.
“He seems… nice.” She frowned. “It’s just really hard for me to be around men who could easily overpower me.”
“Thanks for your opinion. I appreciate it.”
“No problem.” She said with a smile, giving Asta a quick side hug as she spoke “and that’s not even mentioning the fact that you’ll be meeting a possible patron soon. If he’s half as powerful as Rei makes him out to be, you’ll probably be the one anyone bigger than you will have to worry about. Forget physical size, magic is the true equalizer.” She added.
“If you say so… I’m not familiar with how magic works and the social dynamics between magic users and demi-humans who don’t use magic.” She admitted, even if it was clear as day.
The topic of magic kept coming up in her classes, meetings with her advisor, lunch, dinner, lecture, study group, podcasts, books… It was everywhere. Wherever she went, there was pressure to make a contract with a patron and learn magic. It was overwhelming.
“Magic society isn’t that much more difficult to navigate than ‘regular’ society. There are purists, who are generally pretty obvious about it. Generally the more names they say or if there’s a number or bunch of titles, they’re probably super old blood magic family.” She said conspiratorially “most Demi-human cultures generally encourage their people to introduce themselves by their given names, as opposed to family names unless it’s for formal talks. Sort of like how when your family calls you by your full name you know you’re in trouble. If I’m ever addressed by my family name it’s because something either isn’t right or because I’m at work.” She explained.
“Rei told me you were doing some exercises with her to get you in the right mindset?” She asked as a way to change up the topic slightly.
“Yeah… When we have some time together, she and I will sit and work on shifting my focus to different body parts. Mostly my hands, but also my chest and my feet. She told me that it’s important to know what my hands feel since I’ll mostly channel magic out from them. My breathing needs to be even and steady. My feet need to be firm, so I’m not blown away a jolt.”
“That’s what we’ve been getting up to until now.”
“Those are good starting points. Though I don’t have to worry so much on the feet part.” She teased, gesturing down to her lower half “most people start with that stuff as the basics. But the real challenge comes from your intent. Take what I did with the drinks earlier, I wanted to make them colder but not give us both a pair of slushies. So most of the extra cold became the frost on the cups.” She explained.
“From what I understand about the nature affinity as a whole, it’s very tactile. There’s a good amount of whole body movement, not as much as someone who’s dedicated to wind magic, but it’s not as rigid as earth magic either.” She continued. “Have you ever wondered why when you see mage events on tv they always make big exaggerated movements for big spells, while small stuff is mostly just quick arm or hand movements? It’s because those movements help shape their intentions into the spells.”
“I just thought it was for the theatrics.” She admitted.
“I thought their would be a tool or something to help us find out affinity.” She sighed. “The last thing I want is to try and make a fool of myself by blowing up or something.”
“There are some items you can use to test yourself but they’ll have some ready when they do the initial testing. Same with the general casting schools of magic.”
“As for blowing yourself up? You’d have to have a pretty low self preservation instinct to risk that, and it gets even harder to do depending on what your affinity is. And generally with early practice for new magic users they encourage blowing up the practice range. Better to find out what your maximum output is before you learn how to refine that output into something refined and all that.”
“That’s encouraging.” She rolled her eyes.
“What are you going to print in the library, by the way?” She asked her. Asta was tired of talking about magic, practicing magic, getting tips for magic…
She sighed “Paperwork for the study. They sent me a revised version of the signup sheet we used for the first participants. This one is meant to weed out the undesirable people, so there’s a bunch of questions ranging from the tame ones like ‘are you currently in a relationship’ to ‘on average how many sexual partners do you have in any given week.’ I think there’s one regarding having been or willingness to be tested for STDs.”
“Each of the examiners has their own stack of papers we have to print, but they’re comping the fee for prints for us on account of it being study oriented.” She said with a shrug. “I think the idea is we’re the ones familiar with the possible recruits for it, so we’ll be the ones asking and using our best judgment on candidates.”
“Sounds like a hassle.” She shuddered.
“I never got to ask, but what year are you in? Obviously, Rei and I just started, but you weren’t in freshman orientation, so I assumed you’re a year or two ahead of us, right?”
“I’m a second year” she said with a nod “though years get weird to count with wildly different aging patterns between different species. Some classes are designed for people who can spend three years dedicated to an ‘intro to X’ class and still be labeled as a first year.” She joked.
“Classes are a little lighter as a second year and up though, so you have more free time to work on anything from a longer term class.” She continued “it’s why I have the time to work on the study, and more of my classes are theory and reading more so than something more involved like math or science.”

“That was definitely the expression of a spooked man. Sorry for being a little hard on him, Rei.” Asta apologized while sipping at her lemonade.
“You can take the leftover cookies, Sylvette. Maybe your sister might like some, too.” Asta passed her the Tupperware of cookies.
“Perhaps. But I’ll hold out a little hope.” She said with a shrug “he didn’t seem spooked as much as overwhelmed. And we did all kinda pile on there at the end.” She added.
“I was being genuine with the offer to join the study as your partner.” Sylvette said, accepting the Tupperware “as well as being curious as to how it’d work out between the two of you physically. Not that I’d be surprised, considering I’ve seen you work on yourself.” She teased. “And yeah, I think Amelia will love these.” She said to Asta, giving her a thankful nod.
“If he’s willing, I’ll take him.” She said with a smile “I just won’t press him on it until he gives an answer. He’s got my number, so I’m not worried.”
“Hopefully, he keeps baking and offering people. The muffins were really tasty. And I heard that he was testing a blueberry scone recipe to pair with the coffees he makes in the café.”
“I’d love a scone with my chai latte.” She chuckled.
“Well, ladies. Shall we get going then? We have things to print. Rei has to shower.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Both of them said simultaneously.
Rei got up and gave a quick stretch before taking her drink, giving a wave, and heading towards their room.
Sylvette watched her go before gathering up her things “ok, so we’ve got a trip to the library and then to hopefully not scar my mind at the sight of your roommates collection of sex toys.” She teased, holding a length of her coils up by Asta to help her stand.
She accepted the help, leaning on her could while she put her items back into her bag. “It’s an impressive collection. She’s pretty spacious inside of herself.”
“Sylvette, do you think I was a little mean to Abel?”
She wiggled her hand, before pausing as she processed what Asta had said previously. She bust out laughing. “Yeah. Rei does seem to be quite… stretchy. Like I said, it’s fascinating to watch her sometimes, in a purely academic sense.”
“You could’ve been interpreted as a little cold in what you said, but you gave a reason for it. Honestly I think he was too blindsided by your suggestion he find out the answer to his question as an ‘active and willing participant’ and Rei’s response to pay your tone too much mind.”
“I wouldn’t say you were being mean though.” She said, moving closer and putting an arm on her shoulder “a little overwhelmed maybe, since Rei did invite him without asking first. And you did tell her before you have a problem with big men like him.”
